In partnership with the Southern Regional Office (Region 8) of the USDA Forest Service, MobilizeGreen seeks a 26-week, Civil Engineer Resource Assistant (RA) Intern to assist with providing technical advice on all aspects of complex/unusual facility maintenance projects which include improvement plans for buildings, barracks, bridges, water and wastewater systems, residences, recreational and other site facilities.The Southern Region consists of 14 National Forests and Grasslands and one large National Recreation area (Land Between the Lakes) that are located in Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, eastern Texas, Puerto Rico, and a small part of West Virginia. The Southern US is highly diverse and continues to experience a 40% greater population growth rate than any other region. More than 24 million people visit the national forests in the Southern Region every year. The demographic situation and population density is an indication of the complexity, diversity and opportunities that the Southern Region faces as it carries out its mission of "caring for the land and serving the people." Term:

  • 26-weeksstartingSeptember 21, 2020

  • Full Time/40 hours per week

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works to assist Architect or Civil Engineer in completing projects, tasks and activities including but not limited to:

  • Coordinate engineering and administrative work between the unit and the next higher level of the organization.

  • Prepare completed and detailed designs, drawings, and specifications for projects such as roads, trails, bridges, or other miscellaneous facilities and structures.

  • Evaluate design plans and layouts prepared by others prior to start of construction.

  • Provide direction to others in the principles of planning, designing, operation, maintenance, monitoring, and inspection of engineering facilities.

  • Perform complex technical calculations to identify the most economical/efficient procedures for facility projects.

  • Perform reviews to determine the probability of terms for complex or expensive facility projects.

  • Conduct safety inspections and condition surveys of structures and facilities such as buildings, water and wastewater systems, recreation site facilities, and utilities according to requirements.

  • Evaluate and recommend corrective action as needed to ensure the safety of all users.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree: Civil Engineering or Bachelor of Architecture/ Master of Architecture (NOT B.S./B.A or M.S./M.A)

  • Skilled in use of: Revit, AutoCAD, GIS, graphic design tools

  • Deep interest in working with the US Forest Service.

  • Ability to work both independently and with others collaboratively on projects.

  • Strong writingskills with demonstrated writing ability.

Work Environment: May be required to travel for meetings, training, and site visits, including to remote locations on the forest, independently, and in teams.
