If You're Not Reading and Writing, Your Career May Suffer

By Andreas Fanos on March 19, 2018

There are a lot of different majors that students pursue in college. What they don’t tell you is that no major is a guaranteed outlet to fame and money. Each has it’s own upsides and downsides, and others have more opportunities to thrive in and move up tiers. Others are just more rewarding and respected, but there is one thing that all students pursuing a major need, regardless of the type.

In America, one of the greatest countries in the world, anyone can be successful regardless of the major. An individual just needs to build/craft a great resume and network. If there is one thing I could change about my experience in college it would be to network a lot more than what I did, as much as I could.

What people need to understand is that being a writing major, journalism, communication, or any others in the arts deserve some more respect. Being an art major or anything close to it shows that an individual is following their own dreams and not in it for the money. A lot of money can be made, but it is just a tougher route to take and one that will just take some time.

However, when it comes to being a writing or journalism major, people don’t realize that the major helps out students in a lot of respects. The truth is that if an individual did not write or read effectively, they probably would not be able to get into college or get good grades for that matter. Writing is a to communicate effectively and even communication majors learn a lot of good skills to effectively communicate in speaking publicly and how to conduct themselves. For example, despite being in other majors, a person will need to be able to write and read effectively on the job. So being a writing major or journalism is actually very helpful because it does teach necessary skills and improve upon it.

No matter what major a person can have, it is surely good to read blogs and get advice from articles online. Whether it’s science, business, hospitality, computer science, political science, among others, it benefits to read under these majors to get insight and develop knowledge. You might need to read up on the latest trends in computers or read on the best places to work for or the basics of good hospitality or read on law cases in history and write about them, even reading on science journals and writing up labs for example.

For journalism and writing majors especially the best option is to find the best blogs that interest a person and follow them. This is a must for students majoring in journalism or writing. If you’re not keeping up reading blogs or articles, it will harm your career even more. It can be hard, although there are many sites that a journalist or writer can work for to make some side money and get a person’s name out on the web. There is no such thing as bad publicity as they say so engagement online certainly helps a journalist.

And lastly, if an individual cannot write or read effectively, they could lose their job or even not have an everlasting or endearing career. For most careers, people need to be able to read and write well. I will never regret being a journalism/writing major. I did what I had an utter passion for that I work diligently to make a career of. I’m improving and evolving my talents, and others should too. The bottom line is that reading and writing is essential to almost any major and that it is needed more than you would think.
